ORIGINAL METZGER LEBKUCHEN

Metzger & Söhne have been making traditional Lebkuchen 'honey-cake' specialities in Vienna for more than 330 years. Metzger's established Lebkuchen and candle shop in Stephansplatz Vienna brought the Lebkuchen from its founding house in Perchtoldsdorf, directly to the Habsburg court of Empress Maria Theresia.

The unique taste of our delicate marzipan, fruit or nut fillings and deliciously indulgent chocolate has inspired emperors and kings over many centuries. Metzger invites you to try a taste of Viennese opulence this Christmas.

CRAFTING LEBKUCHEN SINCE 1685
-

Metzger Lebkuchen is traditionally crafted with original recipes dating back to 1685, and natural ingredients from Austria. Our pure honey dough is lightly seasoned, free of eggs, fat or preservatives.

Metzger Lebkuchen is an Austrian form of gingerbread with a soft and cakey texture, delivering a subtle taste of honey and spice. Each Lebkuchen creation is candied or coated with indulgent chocolate and filled with delicate marzipan or fruit and nut fillings.

Original Lebkuchen Artisans
-

Metzger produces its Lebkuchen according to original recipes and methods. Our Lebkuchen dough matures naturally for up to 6 months, and is baked without any eggs or preservatives.

Our dough is sweetened with pure bee honey from Austria and spices such as cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and cloves to deliver a subtle gingerbread taste with a soft cookie texture. Each piece is generously filled, coated and topped with fruit, nuts or rich chocolate.

VIENNESE LEBKUCHEN HERITAGE
-

The history of gingerbread begins in ancient Egypt and Rome. In Europe, Lebkuchen was rediscovered in a Belgian monastery during the High Middle Ages. In 1685, the foundation stone of Metzger & Söhne was laid in Perchtoldsdorf near Vienna as a Lebkuchen factory and wax bleachery. Artful, decorative Lebkuchen pressed into moulds and beeswax candles, as well as Lebkuchen cookies served as provisions for pilgrims.

In 1758, the Metzger Lebkuchen arrived at Stephansplatz in Vienna. Inspired by Viennese flair, Metzger Lebkuchen evolved into  new, exquisite creations such as Herrenkuchen 'Gentleman's cake' and various forms of specialities with nut or fruit fillings, thus shaping the history of Viennese Lebkuchen.
